JEWELLERY CARE

At Bijou Co., we craft jewellery that’s designed to shine for years to come—and with a little love, your pieces will keep sparkling like new. Here's how to care for your lab-grown diamonds, gold, and silver jewellery.

Lab-grown diamonds

While Wearing

  • Keep your sparkle strong by avoiding contact with lotions, perfumes, or hairsprays, chemicals can dull the shine over time
  • Wear your diamonds last when getting ready and take them off first when unwinding to minimize accidental bumps or scratches.
  • Avoid wearing your diamond jewellery during intense physical activities like working out or gardening to prevent potential damage.

While Storing

  • Store your diamonds individually in soft pouches or lined jewellery boxes to prevent scratching or tangling.
  • Keep them away from other hard surfaces—diamonds can scratch almost anything, including other diamonds.
  •  Use a dedicated compartment for diamond pieces to keep them secure and safe from exposure to dust and moisture.

While Cleaning

  • Prepare a cleaning solution with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap. Let your diamonds soak for 10-15 minutes.
  •  Use a soft toothbrush or a specialized jewellery cleaning brush to gently clean the setting and stone.
  •  Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and dry completely with a lint-free or microfiber cloth to avoid water spots.
  • Avoid using harsh cleaners or abrasive tools that can damage the setting.

While Wearing

  • Minimize exposure to household cleaners, chlorine, or sulfur-containing products to prevent tarnish.
  • Wear silver jewellery often—natural oils from your skin can help keep it shiny and prevent oxidation.
  • Avoid wearing silver when doing dishes, cleaning, or swimming to protect it from harsh chemicals or moisture.

While Storing

  • Store silver jewellery in airtight bags or anti-tarnish cloths to limit exposure to air and humidity.
  • Place silica gel packets or anti-tarnish strips in your storage container to absorb excess moisture.
  • Separate silver pieces to avoid scratching or tangling. Use compartmentalized boxes for organization.

While Cleaning

  • Use a silver-specific polishing cloth to remove tarnish and restore shine.
  • For a deeper clean, mix a paste of baking soda and water, apply it to your silver jewellery, and gently rub using a soft cloth or sponge.
  • Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and dry immediately to avoid watermarks.
  • Avoid using paper towels or tissue, as they can leave scratches on the surface.
  • For heavily tarnished pieces, consider professional cleaning to restore their original brilliance.

While Wearing

  • Avoid wearing gold jewellery when swimming, as chlorine and saltwater can erode the metal’s finish.
  • Put on your gold pieces after applying makeup, skincare, or sunscreen to prevent buildup of residues.
  • Keep gold away from harsh chemicals like cleaning agents or bleach as they can cause discoloration or weakening of the metal.
  • Take off gold rings or bracelets when handling heavy items or engaging in activities that might scratch the surface.

While Storing

  •  Store gold jewellery in individual soft cloth bags or a jewellery box with fabric lining to avoid scratches.
  • Keep pieces with intricate designs or stones separate from plain gold to prevent tangling or damage.
  •  Consider using anti-tarnish strips or placing silica gel packets in the storage box to maintain the jewellery’s shine and protect against humidity.

While Cleaning

  • Soak your gold jewellery in a mixture of lukewarm water and a few drops of mild soap for about 15-20 minutes.
  •  Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean crevices and intricate designs.
  •  Rinse with clean water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. For extra shine, gently buff with a polishing cloth.
  • Avoid ultrasonic cleaners for gold pieces with gemstones as the vibrations may loosen the settings.
